The Chinese community

The notable attempts to import labor from China took place just after 1848, the date of the abolition of slavery in Reunion. Originally from the Guangdong province, two distinct peoples integrate into the the island communities. The Cantonese settle in the north of La Reunion, while the Hakkas, from a region located five hundred kilometers from Canton, mainly occupy the south.

The women and parents then leave their far away home province to join the men and reconstitute large families, “clans”. A real community emerged at the end of the 19th century.

It is difficult to define a Chinese religion. There are several as well as philosophies. Buddhists, Confucianists, Taoists and even practitioners of the cult of Kouam-Di rub shoulders.
